ANIMARIO 2023

El cine animado está viviendo uno de sus mejores momentos, con producciones sorprendentes tanto en la industria como en el entorno más indie.  Ningún otro medio audiovisual ha sabido unir lo mejor de la tecnología audiovisual digital con técnicas tradicionales analógicas, la ficción con la realidad y el arte con la industria. La animación hace visible la imaginación de una manera prodigiosa, uniendo el mundo real y el fantástico. La animación comunica ideas e historias en multitud de pantallas, estilos y formatos, sirviéndose de sofisticadas metáforas visuales, originales grafismos y la combinación de técnicas increíbles. 

Este año, celebramos especialmente dos ámbitos, que esperamos sean un descubrimiento para un sector importante del público. Por una parte Portugal, superpotencia creativa, mostrará el gran momento de la animación en el país vecino, con un panorama de nuevos artistas junto a algunos clásicos, todo ello en el año en que su cinematografía animada cumple su centenario. El otro foco lo dedicamos a la peculiar técnica de la pantalla de pinchos o Pinscreen, inventada en los años treinta por Alexandre Alexeïeff y Claire Parker y que hoy vive una suerte de renacimiento. Para ambos focos, contaremos con la presencia de artistas y especialistas, así como de talleres complementarios. Por primera vez en España podremos manipular y crear con Pinscreens, traídas en especial desde Francia para el festival.

La sesión oficial comprende 21 cortometrajes de diez nacionalidades distintas. Son una muestra de la riqueza creativa de este medio y de su diversidad. En el jurado internacional contamos con tres referentes: la realizadora portuguesa Regina Pessoa (Portugal), la realizadora canadiense Michèle Lemieux (Canadá) y el comisario Jean-Baptiste Garnero (Francia). Podremos conocer de cerca su trayectoria artística y profesional a través de conferencias. 

Este año, España ha tenido una gran cosecha en el terreno animado, y muestra de ello son los largometrajes de nuestro programa: Robot Dreams, adaptación del cómic homónimo, protagonizada por la inusual relación entre un robot y un perro y dirigida por Pablo Berger, El sueño de la Sultana, de Isabel Herguera, es un singular viaje por la India con toques autobiográficos, y Heavies Tendres, que muestra  la vida de dos colegas en una barriada barcelonesa en los años ochenta, dirigida por Joan Tomas y basada en la serie creada por el historietista Juanjo Sáez. Contaremos con la presencia de sus creadores para conocer los detalles de estas destacadas producciones. La animación española también está presente en un programa de cortometrajes, así como en el estreno de Punto y línea sobre el cosmos, de Pablo Nicolás Martínez Ballarín, proyecto ganador del Premio Animario-Plaza Rio 2 a la producción de animación en 2022.

Animario en familia ofrecerá originales cortometrajes de autorxs de todo el mundo. Animario Pro, la sección profesional creada en la pasada edición en colaboración con Madrid Film Office, Píxel Clúster y que este año cuenta con la participación de MIA (Mujeres en la Industria de la Animación) crece y se abre al talento joven como fuente de inspiración y estímulo para emprender nuevos proyectos. Realizadores de la talla de Rodrigo Blaas (Star Wars: Visions. Sith), Núria G. Blanco (Silly Sundays) o el director de arte José Luis Ágreda (Robot Dreams), son algunos de los ponentes de esta sección. 

Quiero agradecer de corazón el apoyo de todas las instituciones y personas que han hecho posible el festival y muy especialmente al equipo organizador de Cineteca Madrid. Animated cinema is currently experiencing one of its finest hours, with amazing productions both in the industry per se and in the wider indie scene.  No other audiovisual medium has so successfully combined the best of digital audiovisual technology with traditional analogue techniques, fiction with reality, and art with industry. Animation's ability to make the imagination visible is quite remarkable, as is its ability to merge the real and the fantastic. Animation communicates ideas and stories on and in a myriad of screens, styles and formats, using sophisticated visual metaphors and original graphics and a combination of incredible techniques. 

This year, we are celebrating two areas in particular, areas that we hope will be a discovery for an important sector of the public. On the one hand, Portugal, A Creative Superpower, will showcase the current animation boom our neighbours are experiencing, with a panorama of new artists alongside some outstanding veterans, all in the year that marks the centenary of animated cinematography in the country. We will also focus on the peculiar technique known as Pinscreen Animation, invented in the 1930s by Alexandre Alexeïeff and Claire Parker, which is currently experiencing something of a renaissance. In both cases, we will be joined by a number of artists and specialists, and there will also be related workshops. For the first time in Spain, we will be able to manipulate and create with Pinscreens brought from France especially for the festival.

Although the official selection includes no less than 21 short films from ten different nationalities, these are just a sample of the creative richness and diversity of this medium. The international jury is made up of three prominent personalities: filmmakers Regina Pessoa from Portugal and Michèle Lemieux from Canada, and the French curator Jean-Baptiste Garnero. A series of talks will provide an insight into their artistic and professional careers. 

Spain has had a bumper crop of animated films this year, as the feature films in our programme show: Robot Dreams, an adaptation of the comic strip of the same name, based on the unusual relationship between a robot and a dog, directed by Pablo Berger; El sueño de la Sultana, by Isabel Herguera, a unique journey through India with autobiographical touches; and Heavies Tendres, which depicts the lives of two friends in a Barcelona slum in the 1980s, directed by Joan Tomas and based on the series created by the cartoonist Juanjo Sáez. The creators of these outstanding productions will be present to tell us more about them. Spanish animation is also represented in our programme of short films, and in the première of Punto y línea sobre el cosmos, by Pablo Martínez Ballarín, winner of the 2022 Animario-Plaza Rio 2 Award for animation production.

Animario en familia will screen original short films by authors from all over the world. Animario Pro, the professional section created last year in collaboration with the Madrid Film Office and Píxel Clúster, is growing this year thanks to the participation of MIA (Women in the Animation Industry). The section welcomes young talent and aims to be a source of inspiration and stimulus for new projects. Filmmakers of the stature of Rodrigo Blaas (Star Wars: Visions. Sith), Núria G. Blanco (Silly Sundays) or art director José Luis Ágreda (Robot Dreams), are some of the speakers in this section.
