Ladislas Starewitch (Moscú, 1882 – París, 1965) fue pionero y maestro indiscutible de la animación de marionetas. Este cineasta autodidacta, antropólogo de formación y entomólogo aficionado, realizó más de un centenar de películas en Lituania, Rusia y, a partir de 1920, en Francia.

Sus primeros personajes animados fueron insectos y, a partir de ahí, fue ampliando su magistral fauna de marionetas, poblando relatos propios y adaptando otros cuentos clásicos. El de Starewitch fue un cine de producción familiar. En él participaron sus hijas, Irène (animadora-guionista) y Jeanne (actriz, más conocida por su nombre artístico, Nina Star), y su mujer, Anna Zimmerman (encargada de la confección de marionetas y vestuario).

Ladislas Starewitch (Moscow 1882 - Paris 1965) was a pioneer and undisputed master of puppet animation. This self-taught filmmaker, trained anthropologist and amateur entomologist, made more than a hundred films in Lithuania, Russia and, from 1920 onwards, in France.

His first animated characters were insects and from there he went on to expand his masterful fauna of puppets with which he populated his own stories and other classic stories that he adapted. Starewitch’s entire family helped to produce his films; his daughter Irène was the animator and screenwriter), his other daughter Jeanne was the actress Nina Star, and his wife Anna Zimmerman made the puppets and costumes.
